What is the Harary Memorial Fund?

The Harary Memorial Fund was established in 1994 by Mrs. Jayne Harary as a memorial to her daughter and granddaughter who were tragically drowned in a boating accident. Both of them had learning disabilities in reading, and her granddaughter had benefited from tutoring. Mrs. Harary committed the Fund to helping other children with tutoring by providing tutoring scholarships for multi-sensory phonetic tutoring.

Who is eligible for a scholarship?

• Students who demonstrate both financial and educational needs.
• Students who are beginning their educational sequence.
• Students who are motivated.
• Students whose parents/guardians are supportive and committed.
• Students who are willing to attend tutoring regularly during the school year and during the summer break.

What is the application process?

• Parents/guardians complete an application.
• Parents/guardians arrange submission of information from their child’s teacher.
• Parents/guardians may be asked to meet with the review committee.
• Parents/Guardians are expected to provide support at home. If parental support is not provided during the course of the scholarship, it may be discontinued by decision of the tutor and Harary Fund Committee.

What does the scholarship provide?

• The scholarship provides up to 35 tutoring sessions.
• Parents/guardians pay the tutor $5.00 per session.
• The Fund pays tutors up to $30 per session.

Who is eligible to tutor my child? What if I don’t have a tutor?

• Eligible tutors must have a mid-range to high skill level in a recognized multi-sensory phonetic approach. 
• If the family does not already have a tutor, the Fund can provide a list of tutors.
