Research Related to Learning Disabilities

Calls for participation in research have been reviewed and accepted by the LDA of Michigan board, as advised by its’ Professional Advisory. All research posted here has current approval from their oversight boards governing the treatment of human subjects. Researchers are asked to provide formal descriptions of their program, as well as a flyer for potential participants.

LDA of Michigan welcomes research using varying methodologies, featuring a broad range of interventions. LDA of Michigan does not intend to imply endorsement of either the research methodologies or treatments featured on this page.

Policy for Posting Calls for Research Participants

One important part of the mission of the Learning Disabilities Association of Michigan is to support research that may result in more reliable methods for identifying different learning disabilities, as well as interventions that can reliably help a person with learning disabilities overcome some of the associated difficulties. As technology has improved, it has become possible to examine brain function, detect subtle changes in performance, and compare a variety of interventions for their relative effects on the learning and behavior of children and adults.

Our members--persons with learning disabilities, their families, and the professionals who work with them—can support research through their participation in research. It is our hope that the findings from these research programs may lead to improved outcomes for persons with learning disabilities.

LDA of Michigan requests that researchers who wish to post calls for participants in their research provide:

  • Proof of approval from their governing Institutional Review Board (IRB) about the treatment of human subjects in research

  • A formal description of the research project including any risks as well as the benefits for participation to be reviewed by the LDA Professional Advisory Board, and the Board of Directors

  • A printable flyer written in non-scientific language describing the project for potential participants and including:

    • Contact information for the researchers,

    • Contact information for the IRB, or other oversight agencies,

    • Estimates of the time involved, travel required, or other “costs” to the participant, and

    • Description of any payments or other goods offered for participation, and when a participant could expect them.

Following review and acceptance of the formal description of any research project, LDA of Michigan will post the call for participants under the Research, Resources & Articles tab on the LDA of Michigan Website, and will post an announcement on any listserv managed by LDA of Michigan. Researchers are encouraged, as part of their announcements to indicate if flyers may be circulated to other disability sites in Michigan.
