Dues Increase to Support Services

LDA of Michigan dues will go from $35 to $50, as of March 1, 2011 to cover the national organization’s $10 increase in dues. Michigan’s last increase in dues was nearly 15 years ago. Your $50 dues will be shared between LDA of America ($25), LDA of Michigan ($20), and to your local chapter ($5). Student dues ($25) go to LDA of America, with complementary membership in the Michigan affiliate.

How much value does your membership in the Learning Disabilities Association of Michigan (LDAMI) give you? We stand by our mission statement: “To enhance the quality of life for all individuals with learning disabilities and their families through advocacy, education, training, service and support of research.” So, what do you get for your dues?

Your dues give you access to all Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDAA) member services: online tutorials, an “ask the expert” space, regular newsletters, and their website. LDA of America has its office in Pittsburgh, PA, with a few paid staff and numerous volunteers. They have a paid consultant who keeps tabs on federal legislation. LDAA’s volunteer board members keep up on issues that affect their stakeholders, and their professional advisory board keeps us informed on the latest in research and policy.

Here in Michigan, we have an office, a toll-free telephone number, an e-mail address and a website for member information. Our volunteers answer your questions, and help you find resources to support you. Board members come from many walks of life, and from all over the state, and serve as resources to the state. You can also connect with us on the Web:

• Our website: http://www.ldaofmichigan.org/
• Our Facebook sites: LDA of Michigan on Facebook (a group), and Learning Disabilities Association of Michigan (a fundraising cause)
• Our blog: the LDA of Michigan IDEA Exchange at http://ldamiexchange.blogspot.com/
• Our listserv on Yahoo Groups: LDAofMichigan@yahoogroups.com

We are partners with Michigan Alliance for Families, http://michiganallianceforfamilies.org/,  and offer workshops based on your needs, in cooperation with other Michigan Alliance partners.

Finally, each year LDA of Michigan hosts a two-day conference in Lansing with sessions on a broad range of topics relating to the concerns of people with learning disabilities, in school and beyond.

We encourage you to continue to support LDA of Michigan by renewing your membership when it comes due. And, please, let us know what we can do together to help strengthen support for people with learning disabilities here in Michigan.
