Special Alert: The Power to Choose
Safe Products for Babies
http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1421/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=6996
Do you have a child in your life that
you love? If so, I’m sure you do everything you can to protect that
child from harm. Children light up our lives and inspire us to do
what’s best for their health and our environment. But, it’s hard to
know what’s best when there are so many toxic threats to our kids’
health. A study looking at toxic flame retardants in baby products
like car seats, changing pads, nursing pillows, and bassinet
mattresses was recently published in the journal Environmental
Science and Health Technology. More than 80% of the products tested
contained toxic flame retardants. This is scary because these are
chemicals linked to reduced IQ, reproductive problems, and cancer.
It’s unacceptable that manufacturers can put these toxic chemicals
in baby products without our knowledge. It's time to stand up and
take action. Please urge your Michigan lawmakers to give families
the right-to-know about toxic chemicals in children’s products. We
should have the power to choose safe products for our children. To
take action, visit today!
EWG's Sunscreen Report
http://breakingnews.ewg.org/2011sunscreen/best-sunscreens/best-beach-sport-sunscreens/
The best sunscreen is a hat and a
shirt. No chemicals to absorb through the skin, no questions about
whether they work. But when you can’t get away from exposing your
skin to the sun, use EWG’s top-rated sunscreens to provide
broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB-sunburn) protection with fewer hazardous
chemicals that penetrate the skin. Sunscreen and sunblock makers are
awaiting FDA approval for a wider selection of UVA-blocking
chemicals. In the meantime, all top-rated products contain either
zinc or titanium minerals to help cut UVA exposures for sunscreen
users. Choose from among our top-rated sunscreens for broad spectrum
protection with fewer hazardous ingredients. And follow our sun
safety tips to protect your skin for a lifetime.

In a dramatic reversal of a public health initiative aimed at
stopping tooth decay in 1951, city commissioners voted 6-0 last
month to stop fluoridation. The action, which city officials say
would save more than $40,000 per year, comes as debate over
fluoride's benefits versus its possible adverse effects has gained
new attention.

Common Drugs Linked to
Cognitive Impairment and Possibly to Increased Risk of Death, Study
Suggests
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/06/110624111929.htm
A large, long-term study confirms that medications with
anticholinergic activity, which include many drugs frequently taken
by older adults, cause cognitive impairment. The research is also
the first to identify a possible link between these drugs -- which
include over-the-counter and prescription sleep aids and
incontinence treatments -- and risk of death.
