"Enhancing the quality of life for all individuals with learning disabilities and their families though advocacy, education, training, service and support of research."

Aquinas College Hosts Training; New Student Chapter of LDA of Michigan

Amy Barto, Treasurer, LDA of Michigan

On Fri, March 24, AQLDA hosted a training for over 20 pre-service LD teachers from Aquinas College [may have been more than AQ students]. Teachers at Lake Michigan Academy, a non-profit school for students with learning disabilities, provided five breakout sessions: Solve It! and Strategy Instruction in Mathematics, An Overview of Using Algeblocks with Middle School and High School Students; Using Technology to Support Student Learning and Performance; Teaching Shakespeare to High School Students with Learning Disabilities; and, When, Why and How to Use Phonics-Based Methods for Teaching Reading and Writing.

As a teacher at Lake Michigan Academy, I was excited to partner with LDA to promote quality education for students with learning disabilities. As a Board Member of LDA of MI, I was proud of our newest chapter and excited to support our mission of enhancing the lives of individuals with learning disabilities through this training. The efforts (and results) of these young leaders is very encouraging in this time when much of the education news in Michigan does not seem to be benefiting “our” students. Good job ladies!
