Definition of Learning Disabilities (LD)

A neurological based processing disorder characterized by differences in brain structure and learning functions (Learning disabilities are not learning differences).

Purpose

To advance the general well being for individuals with and the education and knowledge of learning disabilities.

Mission Statement

To enhance the quality of life for all individuals with learning disabilities and their families through advocacy, education, training, service and support of research

Vision Statement

The causes of learning disabilities will be understood and addressed and the individuals with learning disabilities will thrive and participate fully in society.

Initiatives & Goals

Priority Goal, Year 2001-2002

Help students with learning disabilities take charge of their lives in their early teens.

Other Goals

1. Training and education initiatives for pre K-12 parents, students, & educators:

a. Basic - how to recognize/diagnose and develop strategies/remediate learning disabilities.

b. Knowledge dissemination – train local advocates and trainers about LD information, resources, laws, etc.

c. Student self-advocacy initiative that utilizes students to train students.

2. Public affairs initiative – a program of educating policy makers and the public/media.

3. Post secondary initiative – a program that encourages LD curriculum as part of the education degree.

4. Workplace/Adult Initiative - how to identify LD; LD rights; where to get diagnosis and treatment and how to make accommodations in the workplace.
